Elements of Cleaning
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
Fire Restoration!
There are four elements that are required so that fire residues can be removed.
- Temperature-Heat increases the speed of chemical reactions in cleaning products. The correct temperature must be chosen depending on the cleaning solutions and the materials being cleaned.
- Agitation- Dislodges residues from surfaces and distributes cleaning products across surfaces.
- Chemical Action- Professional cleaning products work through several chemical reactions with residues and surfaces. The correct cleaning product must be selected depending on the action desired.
- Time- The amount of time needed for professional cleaning and deodorization products to work varies upon the product and type of residues.
Fire damage presents a great variety of cleaning challenges due to the many ways that heat, oxygen, moisture and gases interact to form smoke residues. Our SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa team responds to a variety of challenges created when smoke residues and odors affect different surfaces and materials. We have many procedures for restoration and we utilize them all before fire-damaged materials are declared "unrestorable."

How to Prevent Pipe Freezing
5/5/2021 (Permalink)
Cold temperatures can result in frozen pipes that can cause thousands of dollars in damage for home and business owners. Frozen pipes can be prevented if the proper precautions are taken. Some of the ways to prevent pipes from freezing include:
- Keeping your house warm
If you leave your property for any amount of time, ensure that your heat is set properly. The heat does not need to be set as high as normal, but keeping the thermostat above 50 degrees Fahrenheit is a good way to keep enough warmth so that the pipes do not freeze and burst.
2.Opening faucets
When temperatures are below freezing it can be a good idea to allow faucets to drip rather than keeping them closed in order to prevent a buildup of pressure that causes frozen pipes to burst.
3.Insulation
Fitting your pipes with foam or fiberglass sleeves helps decrease the likelihood of freezing. This is effective for pipes that are exposed but can be difficult for pipes that are behind walls. Insulation can be added to walls in order to keep the temperature of the pipes within them above freezing.

1/15/2021 (Permalink)
Typically where there's smoke there's fire, however not all smoke damage is the same. Depending on the type of smoke, different cleaning methods and products may be used.
There are typicaly 3 main types of smoke. The type of smoke is determined by the material that's being burned.
- Natural:This type of smoke is caused by burning natural products such as wood and paper. These materials produce a dry powdery soot. This residue easier to clean than other residues and repsonds well to vacuuming and dry wiping provided it is not set in.
- Synthetic: These appear when oil based materials are burned such as plastic. These material produce a black thick smoke with a thick smeary residue. These are far more difficult to clean and often need a more agressive cleaning method.
- Protein: This residue is caused by the burning of meats or food items. These items leave behind a yellow sticky residue that is very difficult to clean and often requires a detergent or degreaser to clean.
The experts at SERVPRO Of Farmingdale/Massapequa are highly trained in determining what type of smoke damage they are dealing with and what the best cleaning methods are.
Not all Storm Damage Is The Same
1/15/2021 (Permalink)
Storm Damage is a very broad category. There are many different types of storms that cause very different damages.
Here are a Few examples:
- Water Damage: Rain storm damage can effect your entire home. Heavy rains and flash flooding can cause basement flooding due to seepage or sump pump malfunction. A leaking roof could cause severe interior damage.
- Wind Damage: Heavy winds could cause damage to roofing, siding, fencing, and other areas of your property. Wind could also cause flying debris resulting in more damage.
- Hail Damage: Although hail is more common in certain parts of the country it could happen anywhere. Hail effects roofs, siding, fencing, cars, and many other things. Large hail can break windows and skylights in homes and buildings.

Keep Your Rain Gutters Clean
9/22/2020 (Permalink)
The gutter will become heavier from the excess debris and water, potentially causing it to break. If your gutter breaks away from the house, you’ll have to cover the costs of a new gutter, as well as any damages done to your siding and/or windows. If the gutter is barely hanging to your roof and there is resting water, it can lead to the risk of rusting. Excess water in the rain gutter can lead to spilling over onto the house’s siding, and flooding in the basement etc. These complications and costs of repair can be avoided by keeping your rain gutters clean.
Faster Response
Since we are locally owned and operated, we are able to respond quicker with the right resources, which is extremely important. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces the restoration cost.

Can Your Fire Damaged Belongings Be Saved
6/3/2020 (Permalink)
Fires can be scary and emotionally tough on a home or business owner. While a reputable emergency restoration company and your insurance company handles a majority of the paper work and details, property owners face a much tougher task. Adjusting to damage and the potential loss of belongings can be both heart breaking and emotional. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel! Depending on the fire, location, and the affected material, there is a chance of salvaging many items damaged by a fire.
Knowing the details of what caused the fire and how certain items burn can determine there ability to be restored. Every fire behaves and burns differently, potentially causing different damage. The behavior often depends on the fuel, the weather, oxygen and the environment that its burning in.
Other than completely scorching or burning materials, fire creates soot and odor. Again, depending on the material, soot and odor can seep into fabric, cracks, crevices, and porous surfaces. The material and extent of damage will determine the potential for cleaning and the cleaning process to be used.
A professional fire restoration company like SERVPRO of Famingdale/Massapequa has had many years of experience in fire damage. We can help you determine what items can be cleaned and salvaged. We can also help you inventory your non salvageable items for your insurance claim.

What is Soot?
5/28/2020 (Permalink)
Soot will adhere to walls and any other surface that is cooler than the heart of the fire.
Smoke is the result of incomplete combustion, which produces tiny particles of approximately 2.5 microns in size of carbon in the air. When deposited, these particles are identified as soot. Soot particles may contain chemicals or metals making it hazardous because they are small enough to enter your lungs. To put into perspective, any particles that are 10 microns or larger gets trapped in the upper respiratory track. Particles that are 5 microns or smaller can penetrate the lungs.
Soot will Adhere to walls and any other surface that is cooler than the heart of the fire. If a wall is free from soot, which can help to indicate the area where the fire started and making the hottest area.
Different Types of Smoke:
There are two different types of smoke-wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pre testing. here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue- Produced by evaporation of material rather than from the fire virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

What To Do After a Fire
5/28/2020 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa we run into a few different types of emergency situations. Whether it be fire damages, water damages, mold cleanups, or document restoration the list goes on and on. Below we see ways to kick start your home/business fire damage rebuild process.
Contact your insurance company;
The first step in the process is to contact your insurance company within 24 hours of the incident. Some insurance companies may be able to recommend a professional fire restoration company you can call SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa @ 516-221-3666 any time or night.
The Restoration company determines damage;
Once the restoration company arrives there are multiple different services they provide. First they will provide services to prevent further damage occurring to your home. They do this by putting up containment areas- so smoke and soot do not travel around and affect more of the home- and they begin placing boards down to walk on so the floors don't incur more damage from the company working. Next they determine which of your personal belongings are able to be refurbished and which are not. After, they start to determine which structural items do and do not need to be replaced. All of these items are then built into an estimate which includes the cost of the deodorizing process, the repairing of your home, and the cost for cleaning any of your items. To make it easy as possible the restoration company sends their estimated directly to the insurance company, leaving no extra work for you, the customer!
Things to remember after a fire:
-After the fire do not use ANY electrical appliances that were in or around the fire.
-Do not wash drapes or other materials that may require dry cleaning.
-The more you move around in the affected area the more soot will move around and affect parts of your home. Be sure to have a restoration company in right away to let you know what is, and what is not safe.
If a problem occurs, anytime, be sure to call SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa for all your restoration needs @ 516-221-3666
Identify The Three Types of Contaminated Water
5/28/2020 (Permalink)
SERVER of Farmingdale / Massapequa will inspect the contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response.
Category 1: "Clean Water"
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
This water has significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

What To Do After A Fire
1/17/2020 (Permalink)
Floods happen so quickly that many are caught unprepared, and while floods often can’t be prevented, what you do after a flood can save you thousands of dollars on flood remediation and water damage repair costs. Here are some tips to take after you notice flood damage.
- Stay Safe
Flood waters can be contaminated by sewage or household chemicals so do not go into the water without protection even if it is clear. If there is possibility of downed or live wires don’t risk it, wait for a professional. If it is safe to go into the water wear waders, hip- or waist-high waterproof boots. In addition, wear rubber gloves to remove water- damaged possessions and to avoid contaminants. Hiring a professional to do flood clean-up is the best way to ensure your safety and the safety of your possessions. Any food that came into contact with the flood waters should be thrown away. Boil all of your water until authorities declare the water supply is safe.
2. Take Pictures
Before you remove any water or make any repairs, fully document the damage to send to your insurance company by taking photos or video. If you start removing water or making repairs before you photograph the damage, you run the risk of decreasing the extent of your coverage.
3. Call Your Insurance Company
After you have ensured your family is safe, the first person you contact should be your insurance agent. If the floods have affected an entire region note that your agent might be dealing with their own flooding emergency and may not be available. If that is the case, contact your insurance company’s headquarters as they should be able to direct you to the right information.
Let your insurance company know the extent of the damages to your home and any repairs you intend to do immediately. Be sure to follow the insurance company’s direction about whether or not to wait for an adjuster to inspect the property before making repairs. Document the damage and conversations at every stage of the process.
4. Call SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa
Our expert flood damage remediation specialists can help you recover from water damage. We use scientific drying principles and provide validation and documentation that your property is dry and the job is complete.

Call SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa to Help You Destroy Odors
1/16/2020 (Permalink)
Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems. As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors. With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IIRC), SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa Franchise Professionals provide specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa Franchise Professionals will not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the sources of the odor.
Other Odors that may require DEODORIZATION:
- Cigarette Smoke
- Pet Odors
- Decomposition
- Mold
Whether it's fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll help make it "Like it never even happened."

Steps to Take Immediately After a Storm Damage
1/16/2020 (Permalink)
Storm damage can occur at any time and can cause an immense amount of harm to your home. Heavy rains can cause flooding and powerful winds can cause roof damage and downed trees on your property. Some post-storm damage can create safety and health hazards as well, so having a strategy to deal with damage will help you to be ready to take steps immediately after the storm.
Take Safety Precautions
Heavy winds and rain can create physical hazards such as collapsed roofing materials, window damage, collapsed walls or standing water in the basement or home interior. In addition, moisture can soak into furniture, carpeting, and building materials making the perfect environment for mold growth that can cause health issues. Shut off the main gas line if you smell gas. Beware of broken glass, exposed nails, and other sharp objects on the property. Contact a reputable property restoration company to help do basic tasks to secure your property and make it safe to use. If necessary, arrange for an alternative place for you and your family to live while your property is being restored to safe living condition.
Photograph the Damage
If it is safe to move around your property, use your cellphone or a camera to photograph the damage so that you will have a record for your insurance company. This action will ensure that you are fully compensated.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Contact your insurance agent to notify them about the damage to your home immediately. The company will send out an adjustor to determine the extent of the damage so that payment for repairs can be made.
Look Into Federal Disaster Assistance
The federal government may have declared the area affected by the storm as a disaster area that is eligible for low-cost loans to help restore your property to normal. You will be required to file documents to receive these loans.
When a storm-related disaster strikes, it may seem overwhelming, but these steps can help you to begin the process of restoring your home, and your life, to normal. At SERVPRO Farmingdale / Massapequa, we provide 24-hour emergency disaster service. We specialize in the stabilization and restoration of homes and businesses that have suffered small or large loss from water, flood, wind, storm, fire damage, and smoke disaster. Call SERVPRO Farmingdale / Massapequa at 516-221-3666 for your disaster service.
Water Damage Prevention
1/16/2020 (Permalink)
You can’t always prevent harm from coming your way. Sometimes disaster strikes and accidents happen. Some things, however, you can control. Giving these potential problem areas in your house some extra attention will help keep you and your home safe and dry!
1. Your Windows! Regardless of the season, a drafty window can end up costing you a fortune! To check for drafts in your home, use a lit candle against windows. If the flame flickers as you run it along the seams then you may need to reseal your window
2.Your Plants! Plants both in and around your home can be a problem if they are not properly maintained. In an effort to avoid the growth of mold or mildew on your property simply make sure that your garden areas have adequate drainage, and that you are trimming plants around the structure.
3.Your Gutters! As tedious as it may be, keeping your gutters clean is really going to help keep your home safe from costly water or mold damages. Cleaning out and inspecting your gutters regularly as well as keeping downspouts clear of any blockages will help keep the structure draining properly.
If you do find yourself dealing with the troubles of water damage in your home, give SERVPRO of Farmingdale/ Massapequa a call at (516) 221-3666. We’re available 24 hours a day to clean up the damage and restore your property.
Three Steps You Need to Take When You Have a Pipe Break
1/16/2020 (Permalink)
Three Steps You Need to Take When You Have a Pipe Break
If you are a homeowner, you are likely to know how to prepare your house for a hurricane, tornado, or even hail, but what should you do when you have a supply line break? Water in your home can be incredibly damaging, and if it's your first experience with a supply line break, you might be shocked at just how much flooding and water damage there is to handle. Fortunately, no matter how much experience you have with water in your home, there are three things you can do to handle a flooded home after a supply line break.
1. Stay Calm
if you come home to a flooded home, it's normal to panic. Try not to. Instead, remain calm as you face the problem of water in your home. Water cleanup, mitigation, and drying performed by your home restoration company will ensure your flooded home is returned to its normal state, but panicking won't make this happen faster. Remember that people around the globe have dealt with water in their flooded home. You, too, can handle this.
2. Get to Safety
when you have a supply line break, you might be tempted to try to fix it yourself. Keep in mind that a break is nothing to face on your own. Water in your Farmingdale / Massapequa home can quickly become a hazard, so it's important that you leave the area with water damage as quickly as possible. Water damage isn't simply structural. When you have a pipe break, the area becomes prone to mold growth and insects, as well. A restoration company can handle water cleanup, mitigation, and drying.
3. Call a Professional Restoration Company
Your home may have flood damage after a pipe break, but a restoration company can help with water in your home. Flood damage can manifest itself visibly, but you may also have structural damage that a home restoration company can notify you about after mitigation, water cleanup, drying, and restoration. While the flood damage in your home might seem impossible when it comes to water cleanup and drying, the truth is that your restoration expert has seen this problem before, and he or she is fully equipped to handle this situation.
No homeowner wants to deal with flood damage, but unfortunately, flooding does happen. If you find yourself in a situation where you have river flooding or a pipe breaks, remember that you aren't alone. Your home restoration expert is ready to help you with mitigation to prevent flood damage from happening to you again. SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa will work with you to ensure you're safe and that your home is repaired after the damage.
How to Choose a Restoration Professional
the person or company you use to restore your home after serious flooding should have experience handling water cleanup specifically. While most companies are familiar with handling a variety of damage issues, make sure you ask if the company is ready to assist with cleanup after water damage caused by a pipe breaking. When you reach out to the company, you need to provide as much information as possible. Was the flood water in your home caused by a pipe break? Has your area recently experienced high rainfall? Did a nearby dam break? If you aren't sure what caused the water buildup in your home, just let the company know and they will work with you to create a plan that will remove the excess water from your building and help you get back to your normal life. Call SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa at 516-221-3666.

Keep Your Rain Gutters Clean
3/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa Professionals are Trained in the Science of Drying
2/26/2019 (Permalink)
Dehumidifier
Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its pre loss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chance of any secondary damages. If your business suffers from water damage, your local SERVPRO professionals will:
- Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
- Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether that materials are drying
- Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.
What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material- but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, the professionals at SERVPRO have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa also state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.
The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO have the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at 516-221-3666

Removing A Mold Infestation
Typically, when we think of mold, we picture a green, fuzzy substance stuck on a hard surface. However, when it comes to mold damage, the mold in question is not always so visually significant. In fact, many homeowners dealing with (potentially dangerous) mold damage might not even be aware of the issue, to begin with. This is what is known as hidden mold. Now, although hidden mold is just that - hidden, this doesn't mean you can't find it, assuming you know what to look for.
Do You Have Hidden Mold?
If you have mold damage at your home in Farmingdale / Massapequa you can rest assured knowing that our team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa can be at your doorstep nearly as soon as you find the mold in the first place. As such, your first line of action should always be to remove the mold as soon as possible with the help of a professional team. Not only is removing mold on your own a tricky endeavor, but it can also be downright dangerous. Of course, you'll first need to know whether or not you have mold damage to begin with. Let's take a look at some of the telltale signs of hidden mold damage.
Firstly, have you noticed any water damage on your walls or ceiling? Although even the cleanest of water damage already seems bad enough, it often carries with it an even more grave danger - mold. No matter how light or seemingly-benign a house's water damage is, you can be sure that it will lay down the foundation needed for mold to thrive. Also, if you've noticed a musty smell in one or more rooms throughout your house, you may very well be dealing with hidden mold.
Lastly, even if a surface *seems* sanitary, it may still carry the risk of mold. In fact, mold can even grow on soapy surfaces. As such, it's better to be safe and give us a call at the first sign of mold, no matter how unlikely it may seem.
Locally Owned Company with National Resources
Here at SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa, dealing with mold - hidden or otherwise - is one of our specialties. For immediate and thorough mold remediation, feel free to give us a call at (516) 221-3666 and we'll have our professionals at your doorstep in no time.

Top 3 Reasons Your Roof Might Be Leaking
2/21/2019 (Permalink)
Provide Roof Inspection To Avoid Water Damage To Your Home.
Roofs are often susceptible to water damage that can lead to structure and mold issues if not addressed. There are several ways water can infiltrate building materials surrounding a roof and the top 3 are:
- Age- Roofing material deteriorate with age and becomes less effective at keeping out water.
- Debris- Building of debris such as twigs, leaves or pines needles can trap water against the roof and allow it to seep in by capillary action. Maintenance of roof cleaning is recommended.
- Missing Shingles- Strong winds can rip shingles from the roof.
Most of the issues relating to a roof leak can be avoided by doing routine inspections of the attic/roof area on a regular basis.

Preventing Your Pipes From Freezing
2/21/2019 (Permalink)
Frozen Pipes
Protect your pipes from cold temperatures. Frozen Pipes can result in costly repairs to you as a home or business owner. The good news is there are ways to prevent pipes from freezing. Here are some tips for this winter.Frozen pipes are a problem by themselves because they prevent water flow, but even worse, frozen pipes can eventually burst, causing damage and potential flooding. There are ways to protect your pipes from freezing. These include:
- Keeping your house warm - If you are leaving for a period of time, make sure that the heat is kept on at your property. You should inform them that the heat can help prevent pipes from freezing, and if pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. The heat doesn’t have to be kept as high as you normally would keep it if you were home but keeping it set above 50 degrees Fahrenheit at all times is a good idea. This should provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and to prevent any water inside from freezing.
- Opening faucets - When temps hit the freezing level it is a good idea to allow faucets to drip. Allowing the faucet to be open like this will relieve pressure in the pipe. If a pipe freezes, it is actually the pressure that is created between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to burst. With the faucet open you avoid blockage in the pipes.
- Insulation is key - Pipes can be fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease the chances of freezing. This can be an easy solution for pipes that are exposed but can get expensive if walls, floors or ceilings have to be opened in order to properly insulate the pipe. Additional insulation can also be added to walls and ceilings to keep the pipes warm.

Is Your Business Emergency Ready?
2/20/2019 (Permalink)
Help Your Business Be Ready in Case of Emergency
How quickly your company can get back to business after a storm, fire, or flood often depends on the emergency planning done today. The regular occurrence of natural disasters demonstrates the importance of being prepared for any emergency. While each situation is unique, your organization can be better prepared if you plan carefully, put emergency procedures in place, and practice for all kinds of emergencies. The following are basic measures business owners and managers can take to begin preparing. A commitment to begin planning today will help support your employees, customers, the community, local economy, and even the country. It also protects your business investment and gives your company a better chance for survival.
Develop a Business Continuity Plan: Your organization's risk needs will vary depending on the specific industry, size, scope, and location. Begin by reviewing your business process flow chart, if one exists, to identify operations critical to survival and recovery. Carefully assess your internal and external functions to determine which staff, materials, procedures, and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating. You should also establish procedures for succession of management.
Review Insurance Coverage: Inadequate insurance coverage can lead to major financial loss if your business is damaged, destroyed, or simply interrupted for a period of time. Insurance policies vary; check with your agent or provider about things such as physical losses, flood coverage, and business interruption. Understand what your policy does and does not cover.
Prepare Your Emergency Plan: Your employees and co-workers are your businesses' most valuable asset. Communication is central before, during, and after a disaster. Include emergency information in newsletters, on your company intranet, in periodic employee e-mails and/or other communication tools.
Practice the Emergency Plan: Some disasters will require employees to leave the workplace quickly. The ability to evacuate workers, consumers, and visitors effectively can save lives. If your business operates out of more than one location, establish evacuation procedures for each individual building. If your company is in a high-rise building, an industrial park, or even a strip mall, it is important to coordinate and practice with other tenants or businesses to avoid confusion and potential gridlock.
Secure Your Facility and Equipment: Install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and detectors in appropriate places. Secure all entry and exit points and plan for mail safety. Plan what you will do if your building, plant, or store is not usable. Secure valuable equipment.
Improve Cyber Security: Protecting your data and information systems may require specialized expertise, but even the smallest business can be better prepared. Use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. Don't open emails from unknown sources. Use hard-to-guess passwords. Protect your computer from intruders by using firewalls. Back up your computer data and download security protection updates known as patches regularly.

How To Check For Your Home Smoke Alarms
2/20/2019 (Permalink)
Test Your Home Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.
Check for your home smoke alarms:
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement.
- Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
- Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
- It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
- A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.
- People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
- Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan.
Electrical Fire 101
2/20/2019 (Permalink)
Your appliances are pulling too much electricity on one circuit, causing an electrical overload.
While there are many causes for fires in the home, electrical fires are a particularly difficult type to grapple with. To ensure that electrical fires do not become a big issue in your home, the SERVPRO of Farmingdale/Massapequa experts advise implementing the following safety strategies:
• Inspect your property for faulty wiring, shorts, and loose wires that could increase susceptibility to electrical fire. When you note any issues, call a certified electrician to fix them. Also be sure to make use of safety covers on any outlet that a child has access to.
• Make sure that a smoke detector is installed on each level of your home. Also be sure that the smoke detectors are functioning properly.
• Turn off any electrical equipment that produces an unusual spark, smell, or sound.
• Replace or repair frayed, cracked, or loose cords. Do not place your cords in high traffic regions of the home. Also refrain from placing them under rugs or carpets.
• Make use of surge protectors to keep your appliances safe.
• Keep flammables stored far from your electrical appliances.
• Have an ark fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) installed in the house. These devices monitor circuits to assess any dangerous arcing conditions.
• Do not allow children to climb any trees located near a power line.
Smoke Alarms
Ask the following questions to ensure that your smoke alarms are functioning effectively:
• Did you test them?
• Are they working properly?
• Are there enough alarms in the home?
Switches and Outlets
Ask the following questions to ensure that your switches and outlets are functioning effectively:
• Do the plugs fit correctly?
• Are they warm to the touch?
• Do they work properly?
• Do they make any unusual sounds? (sizzling, buzzing, or crackling)
Lamps and Appliances

Prior to starting the cleanup process, proper protective clothing, eye wear, and a tetanus shot are highly recommended. Exposed skin that comes in contact with flood waters can cause infections and illness. If the electricity has not been turned off by the utilities company, you are at risk of electrocution. In addition, if natural gas has not been turned off, dangerous fumes may be emitting from dryers, kitchen ranges, space heaters and water heaters. Proceed with extreme caution before entering your home.
- Wildlife Injuries. Wildlife gets caught up in the flood too, and waters often carry poisonous snakes, insects, and rodents. When the flood waters begin to recede, it is important to do a thorough investigation into closets, corners, behind furniture, duct work, attics, and crawl spaces where wildlife may be hiding. Bites from wild animals can lead to serious injuries.
- Asbestos Dangers. Removal of items with asbestos must be removed and disposed of properly. This is not something that should be attempted by homeowners. A professional flood damage restoration team in Farmingdale / Massapequa and the surrounding areas is highly recommended. Asbestos is commonly found in homes with vinyl or linoleum floors and in some pre-1990 homes in drywall, duct work, and insulation. If you have an older home, proceed with extreme caution.
- Bacteria. After a flood, every surface and item in the home must be properly disinfected. As mentioned above, flood waters carry harmful levels of bacteria. Without thorough disinfecting, items in your home may remain hazardous.
- Mold. Often, construction after a flood begins too soon. If the humidity levels in the home are not brought down to safe levels, and drywall or other structural elements are not thoroughly dried prior to restoration, mold will develop. The best course of action for mold prevention in Farmingdale is proper dehumidification with advanced drying equipment.
- Severe Stress. Not to be overlooked is the time, money, and stress of attempting water damage restoration yourself. Your locally owned SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa has undergone extensive training, and we have the experience, and tools necessary to bring your home back to pre-storm damage condition. Prevent Water Damage from Dishwasher Leaks.
4/19/2018 (Permalink)
A leak is inconvenient and even costly if you have to close down during cleanup.
Many restaurants in Farmingdale / Massapequa rely on dishwashers to keep things ticking over and ensure a regular supply of clean crockery for their customers. A dishwasher is a handy appliance for any eatery looking to save some time and make things run more smoothly. However, just like any appliance, a dishwasher might break down and cause water damage to your premises. A leak is inconvenient and even costly if you have to close down during cleanup.
SERVPRO recommends all restaurant owners take the following steps to take care of their automatic dishwashers and reduce the risk of water damage from leaks.
Tell Staff Not to over fill
It is tempting to put lots of crockery and cutlery in the tray to get cleaner in each load. However, instruct your staff not to crowd the rack, as an over-filled dishwasher is much more likely to leak. It is better to do a couple of smaller loads than trying to fit everything into one big load.
Do Regular Maintenance On Doors
Loose hinges, misaligned door latches, or broken seals, can all cause leaks. Sometimes the problem can be fixed by simply adjusting and tightening a few screws. You could use an epoxy patch kit to remedy minor seal breaks. However, if it is not possible to right the door or seal, it is better to replace it.
Check The Tub And Hose
The tub and hose can both develop faults over time. Constant use might corrode the tub and make a hole, and aging hoses can become unstable or cease to fit properly. Check all the components of the unit regularly and replace it at the first sign of wear and tear.
Use The Correct Detergent
Make sure every staff member knows which detergent is best. Always use a dishwashing detergent, and always follow the manufacturer instructions. The incorrect dishwashing detergent or too much of the correct cleaning agent might cause suds or even a blockage.
In the event of a leak, SERVPRO’s IICRC-certified technicians are on hand to help with cleanup. We extract water from your premises and use dehumidifiers and air movers to dry the surrounding area so you can resume business as soon as possible.

Pet Fire Escape Plan
4/19/2018 (Permalink)
This poor fur baby got out of the home in the nick of time.
Fires involving structures occur every day, including homes with pets inside. Do you know how to react when faced with a home fire? Did you know that pets tend to panic and hide when faced with a house fire? The following tips are to help you save your pets when faced with a house fire:
- Notify rescuers that you have a pet in your home. You can purchase a sticker to place by your front door that details how many pets you have and what they are. This way, even if you are not there the pets have a chance of getting out.
- Design a fire escape plan: It is important to know where your pets usually are. What are their favorite places? Where do they tend to hide when scared? In an emergency like a fire, there will not be time to waste looking everywhere for your pets. You must have a concrete search plan with at least 3 locations where your pets can be found. This entails creating a layout of your home and marking your pets’ “go-to” locations. You should also survey your home to identify potential pet hiding spots and indicate them on your layout.
- Be prepared: Keep all equipment you would need while escaping a fire close together. Keep dog leashes and cat carriers in the same place and make sure they are easy to get to. Don’t bury carriers in the attic or the back of a closet. In a fire, there won’t be any time to hunt for them. Fires are life and death situations – rapid response is critical!
- Practice makes perfect: Once you have laid out your plan, you will need to practice it using different scenarios. For example, practice what to do if the fire is in the kitchen; then if the fire is in a bedroom, and so on. You should go as far as to practice your escape with your pets from a second story using a ladder. (If you don’t have an escape ladder you should get one, as well as the appropriate equipment needed to assist you carrying an animal down a ladder.) Practice finding your pets. Start outside, rush into the house, find your pet, and take them outside. Repeating this drill can help animals become familiar with process. You may even be able to train dogs to go to a certain area outside when the smoke detector rings. Continue practicing until you are comfortable with your fire escape plan and it works efficiently.
Since fires are traumatic and life changing experiences, prevent further disaster by creating a Fire Escape Plan for your home. Practice it frequently and continue to test yourself.
Call SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa at 516-221-3666 after the fire is out and we will make it "Like it never even happened."
Mold damage - What to Do If You See or Smell Mold Damage in Your Farmingdale / Massapequa Home
4/19/2018 (Permalink)
What to Do If Your Nassau/ Suffolk Home Has Mold Damage
For the vast majority of homeowners in Nassau / Suffolk mold damage does appear, at some point, in or around their property. And, a little spot of mold around the bathtub or the shower screen is nothing to be too concerned about. If it can be easily wiped away and does not produce a nasty smell, it is likely to be a good problem.
However, if you have spotted creeping patches of mold, which has an unpleasant odor, and makes the room feel clammy and uncomfortable, it is time to call in the experts. It could indicate a serious problem with mold damage. If this is the case, it needs to be handled by a professional team who can make sure that the unhealthy material is completely removed.
Understanding Containment
The first thing that will happen, after you have consulted a professional Farmingdale / Massapequa mold damage restoration service, is a discussion about containment. This may mean a number of different things, depending on how extensive the mold is and what type of spores you have in your home. If the problem is severe, containment may have to involve you temporarily moving out of the property.
However, this is quite a rare situation. Most homeowners take action early enough for it to be avoided. Partial containment helps restoration experts limit the mold damage in Farmingdale / Massapequa properties. They seal off the problem area so that movement cannot dislodge and carry mold spores to other parts of the home. It is where heavy duty equipment will be set up to dry, repair, and treat the affected space.
Getting to Grips with Remediation
The primary goal of mold remediation is to restore the property to its pre-mold damage condition. In some cases, this will not be possible. If the damage is very extensive, there may be some parts of the building which cannot be saved. This is extremely rare, however, and a skilled mold restoration team is almost always able to bring a home back to full health.
The thing to remember is that the quicker you address the issue, the better the chance of a full recovery for your property. If you ignore what appears to be chronic mold, you risk the chance of it moving into walls and floors. This is much harder (and much more expensive) to repair, so invest your money in affordable prevention, rather than a costly cure.

Hidden Attic Mold Damage in Farmingdale / Massapequa
4/19/2018 (Permalink)
Clogged gutters can lead to water intrusion and mold growth in your home.
Clogged Gutters Can Cause Water and Mold Damage
Gutters and downspouts clogged with leaves and other debris in the spring lead to the growth of attic mold colonies in Farmingdale / Massapequa. Water pools and does not drain, leading to the excess moisture entering your home in areas not often inspected. We are familiar with this phenomenon and have the strategies to remediate the current infestation and offer recommendations to avoid the problem in the future.
When water has its path impeded with materials that hold back the intended flow it must go somewhere. Damaged and poorly maintained gutter systems force pooled up water under shingles and through the siding, brick, or other cladding materials of your Farmingdale / Massapequa home, causing mold damage in attics and between interior and exterior walls. Calling for our services at this point does not even cross your mind because you are entirely unaware of the problem.
As this water intrusion goes unnoticed, the mold growth and subsequent damage are missed as well. Not until you smell the characteristic musty odor or see feathery or leathery mold colonies moving across ceilings and down walls in your living areas do you begin to make the connection. Whenever you suspect mold damage, SERVPRO is ready to lend a hand.
Not only do we remediate mold according to EPA protocols, but we also inspect for and locate the genesis of the mold colonies, evaluating how the moisture necessary for mold growth entered the picture. SERVPRO technicians are masters at following the clues water leaves, and we also help you understand why moisture is such an issue with mold growth and how to eliminate it as a growing medium for the tiny fungi.
Your outdoor gutter and drain system works wonders at keeping water out of your home when cleaned regularly and installed and maintained properly. When water flows off the roof and into a working drainage system, it is directed away from your foundation and walls leaving interiors dry. When blockages develop, or the gutters and drains are bent or leaking, the water takes the most accessible route right into your home. Slush, snow, and ice buildup in the gutters create ice dams, which force even more moisture into your attic or walls. SERVPRO technicians are trained to identify these issues and help you arrange to have the gutter system rehabbed so that the water stays out and mold has no fuel to grow.
SERVPRO of Farmingdale / Massapequa has the technical knowledge and tools needed to remediate a mold infestation. Call (516) 221-3666 to start the process in motion, resulting in mold abatement and restoration of a working gutter and drain system.

Mold Remediation
3/30/2018 (Permalink)
What is Mold
Mold isn’t just a disgusting growth on a wall; left alone, spores will spread through an entire home. Mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems, and can ruin a home’s structural integrity. It can grow on wood, carpet, food, paper, and insulation. That’s why it’s vital to call mold remediation experts as soon as you find it. The sooner the remediation process starts, the less time the mold has to spread.
What is Mold Remediation
Mold remediation is the process of finding, containing, and removing mold from an affected area and the air around it. It’s crucial to contain it to one area because spores are microscopic and can easily spread to other areas through the air or by attaching themselves to clothes or objects. Mold Remediation experts usually use air pressure and physical barriers to seal off the infected area, including ductwork. Sophisticated filters clean the trapped air before it gets into the home’s ventilation system. Moldy items such as furniture and carpet are cleaned if the infestation is light, or removed if it’s extensive. Damaged parts of drywall are removed, replaced, and repainted. Other items in the area must be cleaned and sanitized, even if they don’t have visible mold. It can grow behind wallpaper, inside books or files and other hidden places. Professionals have equipment and treatments for mold that aren’t available to the general public.
Commercial Mold Remediation
The Environmental Protection Agency has a guide for Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings on their website. The guide isn’t comprehensive, but serves to highlight some of the major issues to be addressed. Even though it’s geared towards schools and commercial buildings, it can help with home remediation too.

Conditions in Farmingdale/ Massapequa Might Be Right For Mold
3/29/2018 (Permalink)
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

Does Your Farmingdale / Massapequa Home Have A Mold Problem?
1/25/2018 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
