The 2021 Hurricane season is upon us here on Long Island. The official start date for the Atlantic hurricane season is June 1st and continues through November 30th. However, there are steps you can take before a storm strikes your Long Island business or home. Following thesetips ahead of time will help lessen your stress if a disaster is to occur.
- Know your risks. Based on your location on the Island, know your risks for flooding and storm surge.
- Know what your insurance does and does not cover.
- Create a plan with your family in case of evacuation. Collect all important items and paperwork.
- Make sure you have all important phone numbers, such as your doctors office and emergency contacts.
- Be sure to have all important documents such as your ID and insurance policies.
- Create an emergency kit.
- Be informed. Get alerts from FEMA.
- Know emergency evacuation routes.
- Board up windows to prevent damage from wind and flying debris. Trim trees and Cut limbs that may cause damage if snapped.
