Typically where there's smoke there's fire, however not all smoke damage is the same. Depending on the type of smoke, different cleaning methods and products may be used.
There are typicaly 3 main types of smoke. The type of smoke is determined by the material that's being burned.
- Natural:This type of smoke is caused by burning natural products such as wood and paper. These materials produce a dry powdery soot. This residue easier to clean than other residues and repsonds well to vacuuming and dry wiping provided it is not set in.
- Synthetic: These appear when oil based materials are burned such as plastic. These material produce a black thick smoke with a thick smeary residue. These are far more difficult to clean and often need a more agressive cleaning method.
- Protein: This residue is caused by the burning of meats or food items. These items leave behind a yellow sticky residue that is very difficult to clean and often requires a detergent or degreaser to clean.
